Ping from multiple locations
Enter a hostname or IP address and each of our ten probe regions sends it four round trips, then reports the average time and how many were lost. You get a result link you can share. No account required.
How this check works
Our probes cannot send ICMP echo packets, so this is not a classic ping. Each round trip is a TCP connection to port 443, 80 or 22, whichever answers first, timed from the first packet sent to the connection being accepted. That is one network round trip, the same thing ping measures, and it works for any host that serves the web or SSH.
A host with all three ports closed shows as 100% loss even if it would answer ICMP. Private and reserved addresses are refused.
Reading the result
Round trip grows with distance: a host in Europe answers a European region in a few milliseconds and a region on another continent in 100 or more. A region that is far slower than its neighbours, or that loses round trips the others do not, points at a routing problem between that region and the host rather than at the host itself.
Want to know when the host stops answering?
A RealUptime ping check runs the same round trips on a schedule from four regions (US-East, US-West, Europe, and Asia-Pacific) on Free and alerts you the moment the host stops answering.
